Witness Ministry Coordinator (80062-LC-¶244)
We respectfully petition the 2008 General Conference to amend ¶ 244 of The Book of Discipline as indicated:
¶ 244. Organization—The basic organizational plan for the local church.... Each local congregation shall provide a comprehensive program of nurture, outreach, and witness, along with leadership training, and the planning and administration of the congregation’s organizational and temporal life, in accordance with the mission of The United Methodist Church (see ¶¶ 120-124). Where church size permits, a coordinator of witness ministries shall be elected by each local church and shall serve as a member of the charge conference and the church council and shall coordinate the work of those designated as coordinators of witness ministries in the other boards, committees, work areas, commissions, and councils of the church (see ¶ 252.5). In churches with few members, an existing officer may be designated as coordinator of witness ministries.
Christ’s Great Commission declares that we are to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you...” (Matthew 28:19-20a). The Book of Discipline...
