Special Sundays (80060-GA-¶264)

  We respectfully petition the 2008 General Conference to amend ¶ 264 of the Discipline as follows:
¶ 264. Six churchwide special Sundays with offerings shall be celebrated in each United Methodist Church. However, the church council may choose to give their congregation an opportunity to observe five of the six emphases—Human Relations Day, World Communion Sunday, United Methodist Student Day, Peace with Justice Sunday, and Native American Ministries Sunday—as Opportunity Sunday on the first Sunday of October. Offering envelopes will provide opportunity to divide gifts among the five funds. With this alternative approach, the One Great Hour of Sharing (observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent) would remain a stand-alone observance. [Remainder of paragraph unaffected.]

Paragraph 264 of The Book of Discipline (2004) now states: "Six churchwide special Sundays with offerings shall be celebrated in each United Methodist Church...." In reality, only a relatively small percentage of United Methodist congregations actually observe all or even some of these special Sundays, much less receive offerings to...
