Associate Member to General Conference (80193-MH-¶502-$)
Amend ¶ 502 by inserting a new ¶502.5 and renumbering the following paragraphs.:
¶ 502.5 Each annual conference whose clergy membership is composed of 10% or more of local pastors and/or associate members shall elect an associate member to attend General Conference, with voice but no vote, and to participate in legislative committees as a resource person.
According to GBHEM, there are 8,800 local pastors and associate members in the United Methodist Church. These clergy lack representation at the general church level. Their congregations are limited in their voice at General Conference where a majority of the laity are elected from congregations of more than 500 members.
