Defining Membership (81513-LC-¶215)
Amend ¶215 as follows:
¶ 215. Definition of Membership-The membership of a local United Methodist church shall include
those all people who have been baptized and those all people who have professed their faith regardless of age, class, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation.
1. The baptized membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have received Christian baptism in the local congregation or elsewhere, or whose membership has been transferred to the local United Methodist church subsequent to baptism in some other congregation.
2. The professing membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have come into membership by profession of faith through appropriate services of the baptismal covenant in the ritual or by transfer from other churches.
3. For statistical purposes, church membership is equated to the number of people listed on the roll of professing members regardless of age, class, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation.
A baptized or professing member of any local United Methodist church is a member of the global United Methodist connection and a member of the church universal All persons who are baptized or professing members of any local United Methodist church are members of the Global United Methodist Church, and are members of the "church universal".
Any person seeking to further their relationship with the Lord should be
encouraged. An important part of one's journey to Christ is the love and support he/she finds within his/her church. To deny any person of this is to deny him/her of something that we, as United Methodists hold dear.
