Footnote (81422-MH-ΒΆ311.3f)

In the extended footnote 3, para 311.3(f), under (8), third paragraph, delete the entire paragraph and substitute a new paragraph as follows:

The General Conference has made it clear in the “Doctrinal Standards and Our Theological Task” (Part II of the Discipline) that Scripture, tradition, experience, and reason are
our guidelines.  “United Methodists share with other Christians the conviction that Scriputre is the primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine.
The General Conference has made it clear in the “Doctrinal Standards and Our Theological Task” (Part II of the Discipline) that basic Christian beliefs for United Methodists are summarized by the Doctrinal Standards.  In understanding, interpreting, and applying these beliefs, and in areas not covered by the Doctrinal Standards appeal is to be made to the guiding principles of Scripture, tradition, experience, and reason.  In this appeal Scripture stands as primary.

Rationale

The present paragraph makes little sense.  The church is not interested that the candidates know what are theological “guidelines,” but that there are doctrines that are clarified by “guidelines.”
