Institutions and UM Teaching (81374-MH-¶1416.4)

Amend ¶1416.4 as follows:
¶1416.4  To qualify for affiliation with The United Methodist Church, institutions must maintain appropriate academic accreditation.  In addition, all persons hired by affiliated theological schools after January 1, 2009, for tenured and tenure-track faculty positions must affirm their agreement with classical Christian theology, as defined by the Apostles’ Creed.  Furthermore, all persons hired by affiliated theological schools after January 1, 2009, for teaching positions within the theology department must affirm their agreement with United Methodist doctrine, as defined by the Doctrinal Standards (¶103).

Rationale

Institutions affiliated with The UMC ought to develop and perpetuate our UM identity.  Affirming classical Christian or UM doctrine doesn't preclude teaching a wide variety of perspectives, nor does it inhibit academic freedom.  It grounds all teaching on a shared foundation and better equips persons to serve in UM ministry.
