UMC Membership Eligibility (80114-LC-¶214)
Amend ¶¶214 & 225 as follows:
may shall be welcomed to attend its worship services, participate in its programs, receive the sacraments and become members in any local church in the connection (¶4).
¶225. Transfer from Other Denominations--A member in good standing in any Christian denomination who has been baptized and who desires to unite with The United Methodist Church
may shall be welcomed and received as either a baptized or a professing member. Such a person shall be received as a baptized member by a proper certificate of transfer from that person’s former church or some other certification of Christian baptism, or by a declaration of Christian faith, and upon affirming willingness to be loyal to The United Methodist Church; and as a professing member upon taking vows declaring the Christian faith through appropriate services of the baptismal covenant in our ritual and upon affirming willingness to be loyal to The United Methodist Church (see ¶¶ 214-217).
All who are of an age of discernment, as determined by the pastor, who are willing to take the vows of membership should be welcomed to do so, deciding for themselves whether or not they are ready.
