Definition of Membership (80104-LC-¶215)

  Amend ¶215 as follows:
215. Definition of Membership-The membership of a local United Methodist church shall include those who have been baptized and those who have professed their faith in Jesus Christ.
1. The baptized membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have received Christian baptism in the local congregation or elsewhere, or whose membership has been transferred to the local United Methodist church subsequent to baptism in some other congregation.
2. The professing  full membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have come into membership by profession of faith through appropriate services of the baptismal covenant in the ritual or by transfer from other churches.
    3. For statistical purposes, church membership is equated to the number of people listed on the roll of professing  full members. The category for full members shall be reported as: 1) Active members which includes the homebound/shut-ins; 2) Inactive members {and inactive member shall be defined as anyone who neglects the primary worship service for eight months within any given year}; 3) College students/Military members; 4) Full members who have moved from the reach of the local church.
  4. A baptized or professing member is one who professes their faith in Jesus Christ through of any local United Methodist church is a member of the global United Methodist connection and a member of the church universal.

Rationale

As a pastor, who is responsible for giving an accurate membership report at the end of the year, I believe that it is morally and ethically wrong to report such members as professing members when such members have been negligent of their baptismal vows.  Removal by Charge Conference actions does...
